Suicidal Squirrels

I finally found out why we get all the power spikes here at St. James. Running at about four to five every week, they are a real pain. I have to reset all the electronics after each strike. After enduring them for four and a half years, we contacted the power company and found out the cause--small suicidal mammals, mainly squirrels. They climb on the power lines, which is fine. But, for some reason, they then bite down on the line: bye, bye Mr. Squirrel. They power company is slowly replacing the lines with ones that are more dental resistant, but we were told that this will take a while.

But, I have to wonder, why is there this urge to self-destruction among the rodents?
